On 27th October 2025, the Renters' Rights Bill finally became the Renters' Rights Act!
First, a message to our supporters. We could not have done this without your support – so on behalf of all our members, thank you. However you have helped, in ways large or small, you've made a difference.
Six years after Theresa May announced plans to reform private renting and over a year since the Government promised to end no-fault evictions "immediately," we are finally at the finishing line. Through emergency pandemic protections, a General Election, amendments and Parliamentary ping-pong, the Renters' Rights Bill has now been given Royal Assent.
This is a monumental achievement. We know that sometimes politics can feel like a waste of time (or worse), but today is a day to stand back and see that things can and do get better through the political process.
PLEASE NOTE: The legislation does not come into force yet! The government haven’t said when this will happen - and we are going to be pressuring them to do this - but for the time being, private renters can still be subject to a section 21 eviction. We will keep all supporters updated as soon as we know more about when it does come into effect.
Thank you again for your support over the years. Whether you've written to your MP, attended our Renters' Day Of Action, or simply sent us words of encouragement, we couldn't have done it without you. Together, we stood up for the rights of England's 12 million private renters and acheived something that will really make a difference.
We're not done yet, though. The Renters' Rights Act (we're still getting used to saying that!) does little to address the cost of renting crisis. Keep your eyes peeled for updates on our plans to keep fighting for safe, secure, and affordable housing for all.
But for now, thank you.
